Working with Vellum
The adhering of  vellum is often the biggest problem when working with it. The same translucent quality that lets you see through to the background also lets you see the big blotches of glue.

There are several options:

  • Tie it with a ribbon
  • Dangle it with eyelets
  • Hand stitch or machine stitch
  • Hang it with wire, fibres or ribbon
  • Hold it in place with a button
  • Use brads & fasteners
  • Use paper ties
  • Collage elements

Journaling with Vellum

!
Journaling should support the photos with words but not take over the design interest - they accentuate the journaling without overpowering the photo. Vellum that overlaps less important parts of photos is a great place for journaling.  'China Cove beach' has torn vellum strips placed over the photo to match the waves.

Chalks & stamps with vellum

!
Chalk lets you add warmth to your page - the delicate colours of a seashell. To create the mood of a soft sunrise at the beach, the torn vellum shells have been first drawn with pen & then shaded with chalk. They could also have been stamped using a chalk pad. The vellum background is torn with a rough edge & lined up with the horizon line on the photos giving an easy visual flow to the page. Chalk also adds a soft edge to the title blocks

Vellum Pockets

!

Vellum pockets add a fun, interactive touch that can be used for personal things, like a letter, journal tags or memorabilia. Objects in the pockets tease the viewer into looking closer or pulling out the object for a better look.

To make a pocket:  Measure the desired size of the pocket & then add about 3-4cm extra for the foldover flap. Emboss the flap decoration on one side of the paper, then turn it over & emboss the flower designs on the other side. Trim the flap edge to match the embossed design. For easier folding, score the vellum where you will fold it for the flap. Fold it first, the sew the pocket onto the backing paper.

Other options for the pocket:

Make a vellum envelope & attach with clear photo tabs so that it can be easily remvoed & opened.

Try sewing the vellum poicket by hand or machine.

Tie the pocket to the page with light twine - add a die cut shape or tag with journaling on the back
